Because screens are advertised by their diagonal dimension in inches, the physical pixel density is calculated by taking the Pythagorean hypotenuse of the horizontal and vertical pixel count:

PPI = √(Width² + Height²) / Diagonal

Example: A 24-inch 1080p monitor (1920 × 1080) has a pixel diagonal of √(1920² + 1080²) = 2202.9 pixels. Dividing 2202.9 by 23.8 inches yields exactly 92.56 PPI.

Why "Standard 96 DPI" Distorts Real Size

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) CSS Specification defines 1 CSS inch as exactly 96 CSS pixels. This was based on standard 1990s CRT monitors.

An actual size ruler is a digital measuring tool that renders physical centimeters and inches on your display with 1:1 real-world dimensions. Because screens have differing pixel densities (PPI), an uncalibrated ruler on a 141 PPI laptop will be 32% smaller than on a standard 96 PPI desktop monitor.
